I recognize that funding of politics is part of our democratic system. I also appreciate very much the relative transparency of American politics.
With that said the funding that is focused upon Democrats represents a stunning gap between Repubs and Dems. Interestingly, I don’t believe the gap is that large in total funding, which would suggest Republicans have a wider funding base. My...

I think that this is worth reading as it has been praised to the high heavens by our political leaders, but upon closer inspection seems riven with problems.
With that said, I like that it had a short run. I think we should do more of this tinkering, particularly around healthcare. If the financial crisis has taught us anything it is that a monolithic response is both to slow to develop and...
How To Go To MIT For Free →

I love this. Almost all of MIT’s coursework is available on their website FOR FREE. Hundreds of undergraduate and graduate classes - lectures, assignments, tests, etc. - are accessible to the general public. I’ve downloaded ~10 business school classes already and the resources are incredible. Anyone want to start a mock B-School?
This is amazing and something that I’m going to...

This is a must read from my uncle, Zio D. An avid biker, a terrific writer and a man who sucks the marrow out of life, whatever the cost.
Zio D is also the one who was kind enough to give me his classic aluminum Vitus road bike. Reading my Zio D and his regular postings on biking the upper left corner of Illinois is delicious escapism for those of us who urban bound.
Enjoy.
The Conservationist/Environmentalist Dilemma →
Really interesting point from Ben Jervey on environmentalist’s focusing on what matters most. All of a sudden environmentalism is moving from the micro to the macro and many of the former “movements” great advocates are still stuck fighting micro problems. The question is do we preserve the grouse and tortoise habitats in an untouched state or do we take advantage of our massive...

Creating Social Network Ghettos →
I think that MySpace can certainly be depicted as an online ghetto, but I think it is because the creators of MySpace created the service as a lead generation tool. That core motivation meant that it was built as a means of exploiting its participants, not as a way of facilitating communication.
I tend to believe that the more technically minded founders of Twitter created the tool to solve a...

AIG Breakup Is Fee Bonanza http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124951576916509361.html This AIG thing gets worse and worse. That said I think this bonanza is a bit more legitimate than that absurd government wealth transfer to “pay off contracts”
