My father-in-law sent this along today. As someone who has been aggressive about making mistakes as a means to learning what I don’t know, I was struck by this video. You’ll enjoy it both for its truth and its humor. Enjoy and thanks Tom.
The Nichepaper Manifesto →
As my regular readers know, I’m a bit obsessed with Mr. Haque and his challenging ideas. This one resonated as it hit on the same points I was talking about in a recent rant on Conde Nast using consultants to reinvogorate their business.
My favorite line is:
“A new generation of innovators is already building 21st century newspapers: nichepapers. The future of journalism arrived...
Thinking about education
Interesting stuff for education ventures.
bijan:
It wasn’t long ago when conventional wisdom believed that building software to sell into the education market was really really hard (at best). School budgets are constantly under attack, infinite sales cycles, suboptimal IT infrastructure & connectivity, teacher training…the list goes on and on.
And frankly, many of those issues still...
Obama’s Speech – An Intellectual Vindication →
I follow this author on Twitter. He must be extraordinarily agitating to the despots of Africa and I can only hope that his voice continues to amplify.
Women are getting more beautiful →
azspot:
FOR the female half of the population, it may bring a satisfied smile. Scientists have found that evolution is driving women to become ever more beautiful, while men remain as aesthetically unappealing as their caveman ancestors.
24Hour Magazine or why magazines can still be... →
I must admit that I love magazines. Interestingly enough I don’t love magazines for their particular form factor, nor do I love magazines which are simply endpoints of an advertising chain.
I love magazines because of their content and am willing to pay what it costs to sustain this content. Currently I’m reading Monocle, Foreign Policy, National Geographic, N+1 and I recently picked...

Maker's Schedule, Manager's Schedule →
Essential part of new economy is rethinking how we organize and share information. Paul Graham has a developer point of view that is worth pondering.
Bill Gates' Unique Philanthropy - Knowledge... →
Apparently Bill Gates bought the rights to a lecture series by Richard Feynman entitled, The Character of Physical Law, and has put them on the web with lots of annotations. This is a pretty cool stuff from Bill G.
My goal would be not be to stage a fight with President Obama. My goal would be...

Fannie & Freddie: The most expensive bailout →
Just a reminder of how awesome government implied backing of private institutions is turning out. Our friends at Fannie and Freddie continue to hemorrhage money. The shocking truth is that government guarantees don’t lead to innovation simply laziness. Now, it’s not that I don’t think $GS is a bunch of really smart folks, they clearly are, my problem is that with the implicit...
For High Line Visitors, Park Is a Railway Out of... →
Nothing really new here, but G and I took a stroll on the High Line last Wednesday night and it was a fantastic little spot. We were learning a little bit about taking decent pictures with our digital and it was an absolutely amazing vantage point for great pics. Highly recommended particularly on a weeknight evening.
Things that Suck
“To develop new perspectives on optimizing our approach to business, growing revenues, and enhancing our brand assets”
-Paul Townsend, CEO of CondeNast, explaining via email to his troops about the recent hire of McKinsey. I just can’t imagine why you would want to work at a place where you weren’t talented enough or didn’t have the political freedom to suggest and...
Rooftop Farms →
Was just talking about this idea with someone last week? If you could commercialize this, seems like an interesting way for Landlord’s to offer their tenants a unique amenity.
Thankfully, That's Not The Way It Was →
Andy Kessler goes after the elites, with Walter Cronkite’s famous closing phrase as an entry point. I remain in Andy’s camp on the wisdom of the few as a wisdom biased towards the few’s chosen outcome. However, I also am trying to make sense of how our world is going to deal with the continuing divergence between the rich and poor and the hollowing out of the middle class.

Niall Ferguson talks about the potential end of the American Empire. I’m sort of stuck on the Big Think today, really interesting stuff.
Michael Lewis talks about the Internet bust in relation to other busts and also the emergence of Web 2.0 and beyond.
